<p>Thank you for responding to my slightly cryptic tweet about looking for <span style="background:yellow;mso-highlight:yellow">
UK-based scientists interested in environmental data rescue</span>!<o:p></o:p></p>
<p>The reason for the interest is that NERC is currently seeking 'ideas' for future research areas that they will fund - called 'highlight topics'. A panel will choose ~4 of the submitted ideas for future development and funding calls:

<p>I am planning to submit an 'idea' on environmental data rescue. As a climate scientist I have a strong interest in old weather data, particularly recovering the millions of observations (back to about 1800) still stored in hand written logbooks which have
never been digitised. But, there must be other environmental data which needs rescuing also - a NERC 'idea' would be much stronger involving a broad range of disciplines.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p>So, do you know of any types of environmental data which require rescuing? Are you interested in this topic and willing to join the 'idea'? Do you know others in the UK who work in these areas?<o:p></o:p></p>
<p>Submitting an idea means writing 2 pages describing the science questions and the challenges. I have drafted the following opening paragraph for discussion:<o:p></o:p></p>
<p><i>Environmental data is critical to help inform about a wide range of risks, decisions and policies, but is often lacking in both space and time. The fastest and most efficient way to obtain additional environmental data and observations is by going backwards
in time, but this has not been fully exploited to date. There exist a multitude of archives, both natural and human-made, in the UK (and beyond) which contain direct and indirect information about a range of environmental conditions during the past few hundred
years which are of immediate relevance to better understanding the present. However, the data within many of these archives is not currently available for use by the scientific community. Recovering and digitizing this data would better enable present-day
environmental conditions to be put into the context of past changes and variations, and to better assess present-day environmental risks. In many cases, additional data would also help narrow uncertainty in predictions of future environmental conditions. For
critical decisions based on environmental data, it would seem prudent to use more of the possible data, rather than just the portion which is currently available.</i><o:p></o:p></p>
