It doesn't make any difference to me whether ships that have inherited codes get new codes or the new code goes to the old ship. All data markup in BODC is inside a relational database so changes are easy to make.
As this is a French ship my guess is that they have data from both hulls labelled '35BB' and will have to change something no matter what. However, before doing anything we must assess the impact on them. Michele is currently on holiday - back April 16. However, I have copied this e-mail to Gilbert Maudire to see if we can reach agreement sooner.
Cheers, Roy.

Dear Michele, Roy and Mitch (35BB is on NODC list),
Celine Cordier has sent in the following information:
"There are two vessels named Beautemps Beaupre.
- The first (1946-1965) was an hydrographic vessel of the French navy. Weight: 2000t, Length: 95m
- The last was built in 2001 and is still working."
35BB Beautemps Beaupre has existed on the ICES list since at least 1998, and 35BB has data associated with it from 1959-1960 here at ICES. I have also found a note on the 1939 vessel but have not found associated data. I therefore cannot OK that 35BB is used for the new ship from 2001. If anyone has information that 35BB is currently being used for the new vessel, please let me know as I have not been able to find any linked data. I have not checked CSR's.
I propose a new code for the new French Beautemps-Beaupré: 35B5
Beautemps-Beaupré, ICES suggested code 35B5, commissioned 2003, call sign FABB, pennant A758, Notes: built 2001
Michele, please specify the platform for the new ship: should it be "Navy vessel"?
I plan to remove callsign FABB for 35BB as I believe this addition occurred in 2004. Please let me know by 16 April if the old vessel had call sign FABB.
Kind regards,
Marilynn

Subject: [Platforms] TRIDENS & BEAUTEMPS-BEAUPRE Resolving past errors
Dear All,
As I try to rationalise the ship codes for POGO I keep running into the confusion caused by ships being renamed.
Problem 1: Beautemps-Beaupré
We have code 35BB which seems to be connected to the current French naval survey ship (pennant A758, commissioned 2003). Worryingly I have a note about a 35BB launched in 1939, so it looks like we have another case of a code transferring from one ship to another.
I propose that we keep the code 35BB for A758 and have a new code labelled up for the old 'Beautemps Beaupré', which I don't think had the hyphen.
Note the the the name in RECO for 35BB has no hyphen, which I think is incorrect.
