At the time of the initial 3-year charter agreement in 1985, the Duke was operated by Carino Shipping Ltd., St. John's, Newfoundland (CAnada-RIeber-NOrway, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Rieber Shipping A/S), and sailed under a Canadian flag with a predominantly Canadian crew.
