Dear Platform Group,

The call sign for the vessel NORVEGIA from NORWAY is incorrect. Corrected information has been supplied by Øyvin
Strand.

NODC will need to delete call sign "IQDR".

Code : 58NO
Name : NORVEGIA
Flag : NORWAY - NO (ISO Country Code)
Platform Class : Research vessel
Commissioned Date : 1927
Decommissioned Date : 1931
Built : 1919
Notes : Antarctic expeditions 1927-31
Notes: Previous Name : VESLEPER
Information Source : http://www.lardex.net/thor-dahl/skip/skipstekst/1927_norvegia.htm (URL)

General Comments:
58NO is an old NODC-code. It exists in lists dating from the 1960s/70s, as identification for ”Norvegia” of the Antarctic expeditions 1927-31, http://www.lardex.net/thor-dahl/skip/skipstekst/1927_norvegia.htm. The Italian call sign must be a mistake. The ship’s diary of the 1930-31 expedition exists at IMR, and lists the call sign as MTGL. This archaic call sign is no longer a part of the Norwegian CS series.
(added by: Oyvin Strand - 23/03/2010 00:00:00)

This ship was added circa late 1993 without the call sign. In Lloyds it is listed as the Italian Norvegia with call sign IQBR, see http://www.lloydsmiu.com/lmiu/vessels/overview.htm?vesselID=334627.

Queried Oyvin Strand: could this possibly be the TOR NORVEGIA or the NAVION NORVEGIA? Another possibility is that 58NO refers to the old Norvegia which was active in the 1930's in Antartica.
(added by: Marilynn Sorensen - 22/03/2010 00:00:00)

Kind regards,
The ICES Data Centre

International Council for the Exploration of the Sea
Email: accessions@ices.dk
Web: http://www.ices.dk

Tel: +45 3338 6718 Fax: +45 3393 4215
H.C.
