Dear Platform Group,

NOAA has confirmed that three call signs have existed for the vessel NATHANIEL B. PALMER from UNITED STATES under the same flag and with the same owners/funders. ICES therefore aligns with NOAA for the code 3206.
General Comments:

This vessel has had 3 call signs because of owner changing name due to a merge in 1997 and name change in 2003. Owner name change triggers a call sign change in the US. The most predominant call sign WBP3210 is listed.
(Marilynn Sorensen 19/11/2013 00:00:00)

WCE9345 for NATHANIEL B. PALMER, Official ship number 981475 ran from 1994-2004 then expired. The Licensee is ANTARTIC SUPPORT ASSOC (sic).

WBP3210 for NATHANIAL B PALMER, Official ship number 981475 ran from 1998 - 2008, then renewed? in 2007 to go through 2018. The Licensee is EDISON CHOUEST OFFSHORE, then OFFSHORE SERVICE VESSELS.

We are able to confirm the call sign KUS1475 for Nathaniel B. Palmer in Lloyds 1995-1996 Register book and the call sign WPB3210 in the 2006-2007 Lloyds registery book. We apparently skipped over the call sign WCE9345.

As far as I can tell so far, the owners, operators and funders (NSF) are effectively all the same entities from the beginning, although they may have periodically revised their names. This seems to be a case for not trying to retroactively change a platform's identifier simply to track changes in its call sign, since so many of the other attributes are the same and there is a significant body of existing data encoded with the 3206 identifier, irrespective of the observation dates.

We have data from Nathaniel B. Palmer from as early as May 1992 and JGOFS EXPOCODES uses the code 3206.
Data at OCL 1992-2003 includes 1997 antarctic data which seems to match the antarctic location of the data from call sign WCE9345. Will propose an update to the call sign without a code change unless someone objects. No ICES data
