General Comments:

Yes, cruise CA121823 currently assigned to HMCS New Liskeard takes place on the Sep 14 1944 while the HMCS New Liskeard was not yet built. I can confirm* that the HMCS New Liskeard fitting and trials in the yard were still taking place in Nov 1944 and she was commissioned on Nov 21 1944 for the first time.

On Canadas East Coast, the only bathythermograph sets that were procured in 1944 and fitted into ships were on the senior officer ships of two local escort groups, EG16 and EG27, which would mean the HMCS Springhill from August 1944 onwards and the HMCS Meon from October 19 onwards, respectively. Therefore, it seems that the CA121823 profiles could be tentatively attributed to the HMCS Springhill (WOD code 8435). The HMCS Springhill doesnt have an ICES code so Ill request one now.

1945 is a different story, more BT sets were procured and fitted in the East Coast warships in 1945.
Unfortunately, we cant simply reassign all data from 8179 (1946-1950) to 947 because there are data from these two codes intersecting in time. I need more time to check if these data intersecting in time may have been collected by the same ship.

Also we have data from 947 collected on 9/14/44 . The September 1944 data were collected before New Liskeard was built on 1944-11-21. These inconsistencies in time should also be resolved.

I agree with the information below, including the cut-off date.
(Mathieu Ouellet 02/07/2014 00:00:00)

I have taken a look at the Hiskcard, New Hiskcard, New Liskard, and New Liskeard names and codes. My conclusions based on Mathieus work are:

These are the same vessel with the name New Liskeard
18 HI WOD 8179 should be changed from HMCS HISKCARD to HMCS New Liskeard
18NL WOD 947 should be changed from HMCS New Liskard to CNAV New Liskeard
The cutoff year should be the refitting to an oceanographic research vessel (CNAV) after april 23, 1958 https://www.flickr.com/photos/dr_gorham/6028574063/in/set-72157627391379147
WOD 947 at OCL contains submissions for HMCS and CNAV Liskeard and these should be rearranged under the proper code based on the April 23, 1958 cutoff.

I have attached the information that I propose to send to the platform group. Please take a look and let me know if you agree or disagree.

Title changes but no change to the hull.No new code needed. However, if the title changes because of change to hull or governance, then yes, a new code is needed. This vessel was converted to an oceanographic vessel so we need 2 codes for the New Liskeard.
(Marilynn Sorensen 13/06/2014 00:00:00)

Spelling is "New Liskeard", not "Liskard". Royal Canadian Navy ships were often named after places; "New Liskeard" is the name of a small city north of Ontario. There are no "Liskard" toponyms in Canada according to the Canadian Geographical Names Data Base. Plus several government sources attest the "New Liskeard" spelling.

A new ship code should probably created for the 1958-1968 period and the WOD data post 1958 should be realigned with the new code. This Fisheries Research Board of Canada report mentions her presence in Bay of Fundy in 1960, as "CNAV New Liskeard": http://waves-vagues.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/waves-vagues/search-recherche/display-afficher/230938; or perhaps this code can be used for both ? I'm not sure what the rules are when the title changes.

As far as I know, she did not collect data during WWII.
(Mathieu Ouellet 29/04/2014 00:00:00)

18NL has been on NOAA/ICES list since at least 1991. At that time, it was spelled New Liskeard. On the 1996 NOAA/ICES list, the spelling had changed to New Liskard.
(Marilynn Sorensen 22/04/2014 00:00:00)

Possibly the same ship as the NOAA list 18HI, WOD 8179, HMCS HISKCARD. Email from Mathieu Ouellet that HMCS HISKCARD is possibly/probably the HMCS New Liskeard. He will research this.
