    Actually, I want to use both :<br>
    <ul>
      <li>L05 in the metadata CDI files  where I would like to
        distinguished XBTs from MBTs</li>
      <li> L22 codes in the data files on the SDN_parameter_mapping
        lines where I will add the L22 codes of the XBT or MBT used.</li>
    </ul>
    <p>The generic L22 codes could also be useful for us for managing <b>old
        historical</b> <b>data</b> where we do not find the exact type
      of XBT that was used, which unfortunately happens quite often.<br>

          distinguish XBTs and MBTs in CDI records, which are marked up
          using L05 rather than L22. This needs the L05 extension unless
          Michele is happy to use the XLINK mechanism to link to L22
          concepts even though this isn't searchable through the CDI
          interface. </p>

          understood this correctly? Could you please confirm that you
          still want the new L05 entries?</p>

          could be set up in L22. I don't like generic entries because
          they encourage short-cuts when creating metadata. It's much
          easier to use a generic concept than do the research necessary
          to obtain a more precise description of the data production
          tool. However, I do concede that there are times when no
          amount of research will provide the necessary information and
          a generic concept has to be used. A note to all is that this
          should be considered as a last resort. There are times - such
          as drop-rate equation corrections - where detailed knowledge
          of the XBT type is important. </p>

                      searching metadata would cause records marked up
                      with the new terms to be selected when searching

                      haven't got this functionality so it might be a
                      good idea to include 'bathythermographs' as well
                      as 'expendable bathythermographs' when marking up
                      XBT metadata.</p>

                            categories. In a similar manner for CTDs,
                            they are more granular terms for
                            bathythermographs (132). This is to help our
                            users distinguish between XBTs and MBTs:</p>

                            Expendable bathythermographs
                          </p>

                            Disposable, free-falling probes that measure
                            temperature in relation to depth using a
                            thermistor and electronic data acquisition
                            system. Probes are dropped into the water
                            and a temperature signal is transferred to
                            the platform by a wire that breaks when the
                            wire is out. Depth is calculated as a
                            function of time to descend and a known
                            constant rate of descent.</p>
