Der MEDIN DAC Working Group,

Please find below details of a data rescue workshop at STFC in a couple of weeks. MEDIN has funded some excellent data rescue projects in the past and the organisers would like to share knowledge from successful projects across different environmental disciplines.

Best wishes,
Clare

Hello

As someone involved in environmental data rescue we thought you may be interested in attending a free workshop at STFC, Harwell on 18th May.

We know there's a huge potential for scientific and societal benefits from rescuing datasets that are currently unavailable digitally, either through digitisation from paper records or recovery from obsolete formats. Climate change and the need to understand trends and change over longer periods make rescuing key datasets even more important. Many of us are aware of datasets that would benefit from data rescue, whether in the UK or overseas.

There have been some fantastic and high profile examples of data rescue recently, such as the weatherrescue.org project, but it is still very hard to get momentum behind data rescue projects and initiatives.

We would like to take this opportunity to bring together UK scientists with an interest in environmental data rescue to catalogue past successes and potential future data rescue projects that would have major benefits and consider how to push data rescue up the agenda and make more data rescue happen. Provisional agenda to cover: 1. Past examples of successful data rescue and benefits/impact; 2. Known data rescue needs in the UK and elsewhere; 3. Obstacles in rescuing important datasets including funding, equipment, guidance, institutional issues, etc. It would be great to have 1 or 2 slides on relevant data rescue projects / datasets from those attending.

This is a spin-out meeting from the Research Data Alliance's Data Rescue Interest Group (https://rd-alliance.org/groups/data-rescue.html <https://rd-alliance.org/groups/data-rescue.html> ), and will take place at the end of the PV2018 conference, which also covers data rescue within its programme: http://www.ceda.ac.uk/contact/pv2018/ <http://www.ceda.ac.uk/contact/pv2018/>

Please let us know if you are interested in attending by emailing mfry at ceh.ac.uk <mailto:mfry at ceh.ac.uk> by 30th April and please pass this email on to anyone else who may be interested in environmental data rescue.

Many thanks

Matt Fry (CEH) and Liz Bradshaw (BODC)
