Hi everyone,

Sean Gaffney from WS2 Standards and Guidelines here. I would like to draw your attention to some changes in the geospatial metadata environment here in the UK (I appreciate some of you will already be aware of this).

After the publication of v2.3 of the GEMINI profile late summer last year, DEFRA have taken the position that, commencing 01 January 2020, any new or edited content going into data.gov.uk must comply with v2.3 of the GEMINI profile.
Currently, all MEDIN tools produce output that complies with v2.2 of the GEMINI profile.
MEDIN released new guidance notes for the MEDIN Discovery Metadata Standard (v3.0) back in March. This was designed and written explicitly to comply with version 2.3 of the GEMINI profile. MEDIN also published a changelog that shows that the level of difference between the old standard and the new is extensive (see https://www.medin.org.uk/medin-discovery-metadata-standard).

However, the release of the guidance notes does not enable people to generate MEDIN v3.0 (and by default GEMINI v2.3) compliant metadata yet. In order to generate MEDIN v3.0 metadata (and therefore be compliant with GEMINI v2.3), the MEDIN tools need to be updated.

To this end, MEDIN have last week sent out Invitations to Quote for organisations to write a new MEDIN Schematron and XSD for v3.0 of the Standard. The deadline for the response is Friday 14 June, with the intention to start the work on 01 July. This piece of work is intended to last 1 month.

Once the Schematron work is in progress, MEDIN will then work with HR Wallingford and DASSH to ensure the MEDIN metadata tools are updated to handle v3.0 MEDIN metadata. MEDIN would envisage this work starting in late summer/early autumn and lasting 2 months maximum.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions,

Regards

Sean Gaffney
