Dear MEDIN DAC Working Group,
Next week I will be representing MEDIN at a workshop, organised by the UKHO (invitation below) on behalf of the Geospatial Commission to help inform a National Geospatial Strategy. A full agenda is not yet available but the themes to be discussed are likely to be:
collaboration, standards, data accessibility, data collection, autonomy, economy.
The workshop will loosely be looking to understand what the marine community are doing well, where we can improve, how we can improve, where we are doing nothing and should be doing more, where we are doing nothing and can afford to keep as a low priority.
If you are unable to attend the workshop, please feel free to send me any thoughts and I'll make sure they are represented. I will also circulate the actual agenda when I receive it and my notes afterwards.
Best wishes,
Clare

National Marine Geospatial Solutions Workshop – Tuesday, 12 November 2019
Further to our ‘Save the Date’ email, and in collaboration with BEIS, the UK Hydrographic Office has been directed by the Government’s Geospatial Commission to coordinate the creation of an evidence base and series of recommendations for consideration in their forthcoming National Geospatial Strategy. After successfully completing the initial Discovery Phase workshops, which focused on diagnosing the obstacles and opportunities we all face, we will now be conducting this final workshop to understand the potential solutions and recommendations for inclusion in the Marine Geospatial Evidence Base. With so many stakeholders in the UK’s rich marine geospatial community, we are keen that all have an opportunity to contribute.
As a marine geospatial stakeholder, we would be delighted to invite you:
· to the Marine Geospatial Solutions Workshop on Tuesday, 12 November 1330 - 1630
· at the Churchill War Rooms (HCA Auditorium), Clive Steps, King Charles Street, London SW1A 2AQ
· to register your participation by emailing marine.geospatial at ukho.gov.uk<mailto:marine.geospatial at ukho.gov.uk> by Thursday 7 November with your name, organisation and contact details. If you are unable to attend please feel free to send a representative.

Why does this matter to me and my organisation?
Marine Geospatial Data is any information in the ocean space that can be attributed with a location and it is widely accepted that nearly every activity undertaken in the ocean fundamentally relies on one or more of its numerous forms. These activities stretch from enabling shipping and the innovation of maritime autonomy; to offshore energy, fisheries and environmental research; to legal delimitation, finance and infrastructure planning. With the constant development of new technologies and the increasing reliance on our ocean to meet the needs of today’s fast-changing world, a coordinated approach from right across the UK’s diverse Marine Geospatial Community will be essential.
The development of the National Geospatial Strategy is also timely; with initiatives such as the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development and the Government’s Foresight Future of the Sea Report, Maritime 2050 Strategy and forthcoming International Ocean Strategy; all create new opportunities for Marine Geospatial Data to inform sustainable ocean innovation, prosperity and environmental protection.
We look forward to seeing you at the workshop on Tuesday, 12 November.
Best regards
UKHO Team
