Dear MEDIN DACs,
I hope you are keeping well.
The 'Valuing marine data' survey has now been live for 2 weeks and over that time many of you have added links to your own data portals/websites and have been promoting it on social media. I thought it would be useful for you to see the response rate.

27 responses seems a little low and I'm really hoping we can do something about that over the next couple of weeks. You will have seen today that I started the email promotion of the survey and I hope that will have an impact on the figures. I really hope you will be able to promote the survey to your own organisations and broader networks, where appropriate.
We are aiming to close the survey on 26th June (although we do have scope to keep it open until 10th July if it looks like it might be beneficial).
I'll keep you posted over the coming weeks on further progress.
Best wishes,
Clare

Subject: Value of marine data. ... survey ready to go!
Dear MEDIN DACs,
with apologies for the slight delay, please find attached the final version of the "Introductory note" to participate in the MEDIN/OECD/GOOS project to "Value marine data".
I'm excited to say that the survey is now **live** and you can link to it here
https://survey2018.oecd.org/Survey.aspx?s=39c3e2e36f984cc4b45b93a1bde962db
The following DACs have already let me know that they would like to be involved:
ADS, BGS, BODC, Cefas, DASSH, HES (depending on furlough) and UKHO and there is still scope for any of the other DACs to get involved if you can. Just let me know if you would like to find out more.
I'd be grateful if you could let me know when you have managed to get the link onto your website or circulated to your stakeholders.
Keep an eye out for MEDIN social media and other comms on this (see schedule below).
Best wishes and thank you again for your involvement in this project,
Clare

Subject: Value of marine data. ... survey nearly ready to go!
Dear MEDIN DACs,
thanks so much to all DACs who have agreed to be part of this exciting opportunity to partner with the OECD/GOOS to carry out an independent survey of the users of marine data. I received over 50 comments from the DACS on the draft survey and OECD have made updates to accommodate as many of the suggestions as they could.
The survey will go live on Monday 11th May and will be live for at least 6 weeks.
MEDIN are planning to do a fortnightly communication hit as follows and it would be great if you could coordinate activities around this if possible:
Week of 11th May 2020
Survey link live and sent to DACs
Survey on MEDIN website
Survey on MEDIN portal
Survey on participating DAC websites where possible
Email to MEDIN partners and other relevant mailing lists
DACs to contact mailing lists if appropriate
MEDIN social media campaign (tagging DACs)
Week of 25th May 2020
OECD report responses to MEDIN and DACs
Repeat social media (tagging DACs)
Week of 8th June 2020
OECD report responses to MEDIN and DACs
Email to MEDIN partners and other relevant mailing lists
DACs to contact mailing lists if appropriate
MEDIN social media campaign (tagging DACs)
Week of 22nd June 2020
Provisional last day of survey
Each DAC can provide their own text to accompany the survey link but I am including the text that MEDIN will use (in an attachment) for your information.
As always, let me know if you have any questions.
Thank you again ... I think this is going to be a really interesting project to be part of, to understand how our marine data are being used.
Best wishes,
Clare

Subject: Fw: Opportunity to assess the value of marine data.
Dear MEDIN DACs,
Would you like the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) to carry out an independent survey of the users of your marine data?
I hope you and your colleagues are keeping well. As you know, the MEDIN Core Team have adapted to working from home and are continuing to drive forward MEDIN’s programme of work. For me, one strand of this means the exciting project with OECD and GOOS looking at the value chain of marine data…
You may recall I contacted you in February to enquire whether you would be interested in an opportunity to assess the value of your marine data holdings. I did not hear back from you then but I wanted to give you another chance to get involved in this exciting joint project with OECD/MEDIN and The Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS).
OECD have designed a brief questionnaire (with input from MEDIN and GOOS) and we are now ready for the participating MEDIN Data Archive Centres to test the questionnaire and let us know if they feel anything is missing.
The attached document describes the project in a bit more detail and includes the text used in the survey. Please let me know asap if you would like to be involved in this project or want to know more. The more of the MEDIN DACs that get involved in the project, the more complete a picture we can obtain of the uses of marine data.
If you do want to be involved, please use track changes in the attached document to note any gaps in the questionnaire. We’d also appreciate it if you could test the online version of the questionnaire to check for any outstanding bugs. This is available here: https://survey2018.oecd.org/Survey.aspx?s=39c3e2e36f984cc4b45b93a1bde962db&forceNew=true&test=true
We aim to have the survey ready to be launched at the end of April so I would appreciate all your comments by 22nd April.
I very much hope that your DAC can be part of this project. Do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.
Best wishes,
Clare

Subject: Opportunity to assess the value of marine data.
Dear MEDIN Data Archive Centres (DACs),
Would you like the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) to carry out an independent survey of the socio-economic value of your marine data?
As you know, recent independent analysis found that the benefit to cost ratio of MEDIN’s services is approximately 8, indicating that “the benefits far outweigh the cost of providing the service”. This is an important step for understanding the value of marine data management and dissemination but doesn’t capture the value of the data itself to our users. MEDIN Data Archive Centres have the opportunity over the next 6 months to be involved in an international project looking to quantify the value of marine data. The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS, IOC-UNESCO) are working together on developing a pragmatic research programme focussed on valuing ocean observations, as to inform practitioners and policy-makers with original evidence-based analysis on the links between marine data and society.
The attached document describes the process that MEDIN/OECD/GOOS envisage. MEDIN will be the main contact point for your involvement in the project. Please let me know by 12th February whether your DAC is interested in participating in this exciting opportunity.
It would also be really useful to know if you have carried out any surveys of your data users over the past 2 years (see question in red in attachment).
If you have any questions about this, drop me an email.
Best wishes,
Clare Postlethwaite
