Marine data play a crucial role for many scientific disciplines, as well as for a diverse range of operational services, such as fisheries management, environmental planning, marine conservation, weather forecasting, or port management. The information derived from marine data is also increasingly finding its way into a wide and varied range of public policy arenas and private industries. Collecting, distributing, and archiving public marine data provide benefits to society at large, however as with all public investments, assessments are needed to provide evidence to decision makers to guide and prioritise the additional efforts and investments required. An original survey of UK marine data users, conducted by the Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS)<https://ioc-goos.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=16036ef572b0c3aef59a0699e&id=fc06cdf072&e=4e6a7f9048>, the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD<https://ioc-goos.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=16036ef572b0c3aef59a0699e&id=9eca4577e6&e=4e6a7f9048>) and the Marine Environmental Data and Information Network (MEDIN)<https://ioc-goos.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=16036ef572b0c3aef59a0699e&id=e0b4a8c477&e=4e6a7f9048>, explores the pathways through which marine data are used and transformed into actionable information, in order to better value vital marine information. The results of this initial survey have just been published in a new paper, Value chains in public marine data<https://ioc-goos.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=16036ef572b0c3aef59a0699e&id=ec6f992d78&e=4e6a7f9048>. The webinar will provide an overview of this analysis, showing trends in current marine data use in the UK, the key benefits, and for the first time, identifying systematised value chains.

The webinar will be of interest to:

  *   Ocean observing community – insight into data use and value
  *   Marine data managers – insight into current users and data trends
  *   Ocean or blue economy economists – insight into data flow in the economy

The paper lays the foundations for further OECD work with the marine data community.
