Thanks,

Great - unless I hear otherwise from anyone by the end of the day, I'll therefore go with the definitions as follows:

Digital Audio:

Recordings of sound converted to an electrical signal the properties of which are sampled at regular intervals and stored.

Analogue Audio:
Recordings of sound converted to an electrical signal which is stored continuously using a medium such as magnetic tape or vinyl.

Thanks

Sean

Yeah, I'd go for that , but for one small tweak - would suggest that instead of saying "determined as numbers" you use 'sampled at regular intervals and stored' - that after all is the essence of digitisation - sampling.

Hi Steve,

Roy has proposed the following, which I think captures our requirements very nicely...

Digital Audio:

Recordings of sound converted to an electrical signal the properties of which are determined as numbers at regular intervals and stored.

Analogue Audio:

Recordings of sound converted to an electrical signal which is stored continuously using a medium such as magnetic tape or vinyl.

Hi Sean,

I don't know if I would restrict the definition to 'fluids'. What about something a bit more simple like "an electronic recording\representation of sound". And I agree with Roy, I think you probably what to differentiate between analogue and digital.

Dear MEDIN Standards Working Group,

I have an action to include the term 'Audio' as one of the data format types that MEDIN has in its vocabulary, M01. See the hyperlink below for details of current entries.

https://www.bodc.ac.uk/data/codes_and_formats/vocabulary_search/M01/

For audio, I propose as a first draft of the definition:

"Audio: Recordings, in either digital or analog form, of vibrations which cause a periodic disturbance in the pressure or density of a fluid or the elastic strain of an object and travel as longitudinal waves"

I would be grateful for any comments relating to this definition.

Regards

Sean Gaffney
