Dear all,

Please find below the part 2 of the BODC story. I hope all of you have
received the first part by now, but as I said our system is very slow.

Bye for now,
Susanne

All the below codes as ICES74?? and related comments are as suggested by
BODC.
Below the dashed line you will find my own (SR:) comments and possible
solution.

ICES740H	RRS James Cook	New NERC Research Vessel
------------------------------------------------------------------------
SR: We can accept this code, which is not used by NODC either. This
vessel
will be delivered in August 2006, hence no call sign is available yet.

ICES740I	RV Calanus (47-80)	Original SAMS vessel replaced
                                        in 1980
------------------------------------------------------------------------
SR: We don't have any data from this 'old' Calanus, only some ROSCOP
forms.
This ship must be from when 'SAMS'(Scottish Assocoation for Marine
Science)
was actually SMBA (Scottish Marine Biological Association), which I
think
was before 1991/1992. We can accept the code 740I, and this code is not
used
by NODC either. See below as well.

ICES7404 RV Calanus	SAMS, Dunstaffnage Marine Lab vessel.
                                Built 1980. CallSign GBJK"
------------------------------------------------------------------------
SR: We have data from this (new) ship and it is coded as 745R on both
the
ICES and the NODC lists. Hence we should not use the code 7404 for this
ship.

ICES740J	RV Corystes	Ship operated by DARD under same name.
Still chartered by CEFAS from time to
time.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
SR: The RV Corystes (call sign GHRU) has the code 74RY and we should
keep this code, as it is the same ship. The Corystes was built in 1988,
operated by CEFAS, but was transferred to DARD, Northern Ireland on
31. January 2005. CEFAS still charter this ship, but the same code
should be used, as we code the ship and not the organisation.

ICES74RY	RV Corystes (89-04) Ship owned and operated by
CEFAS
------------------------------------------------------------------------
SR: See comments above. The ship was built in 1988, not 1989
I suggest we make a comment eg.: Built 1988, CEFAS -2004, DARD/CEFAS
2005-

ICES740K	RRS Shackleton (57-70)	Operated by BAS as a base supply
                                    vessel
------------------------------------------------------------------------
SR: We have ROSCOPs and some data at ICES from 1972-1983, all coded as
74SF.
This code is on both the ICES & NODC lists. I am not sure if the
'(57-70)'
means years of service or data available, and need to know if this is
another ship. I have found some info on the web, and have written to a
person who was in the Antarctic at that time. Do any of you have data
from
a RRS Shackleton prior to 1971?
I will wait to see if I hear from the guy.

ICES740L	RRS William Scoresby	NIO research vessel from
1950-1954
------------------------------------------------------------------------
SR: We have data at ICES from a 74WS from 1926-1950. The spelling in the
ICES and NODC lists has been W. ScoresKy up to an including 2002, and
still so on the ICES list.
>From 2003-on the NODC spelling has changed to William Scoresby and I am
sure it is the same ship. I suggest we do NOT use the code 740L, but
correct
the name on the ICES list to William Scoresby and add the prefix RSS to
the
comments field.

ICES740M	RV Jane Small NERC research vessel
------------------------------------------------------------------------
SR: We have no data, ROSCOPs or information about this ship, and can
agree
to the code 740M, which is not used by NODC either. Any call sign or
other
info available?
