Dear all,

This should be the 3. email about BODC codes from me, so we are getting
closer to the end
now. I hope to send the last ones before I go on vacation next week.

No explanation this time, same procedure as last...

All the best,

Susanne

ICES740N	RRS Ernest Shackleton	BAS base supply vessel from 1999
------------------------------------------------------------------------
SR: This ship is the former Polar Queen, built in Norway in 1995 and
acquired
by BAS in August 1999. The call sign is ZDLS1.

The NODC has the RRS Ernest Shackleton coded as 74E9, but ICES has in
April
2003 allocated this code to the CEFAS Endeavour, call sign VQHF3, and
this
was reported to NODC and agreed to. Something has gone wrong here, and
now
we have a problem I am afraid.

We have 2004 data (48 stations) at ICES from the CEFAS Endeavour, but no
data from the RRS Ernest Shackleton.

I have no idea of how we can solve this, as both of these codes have
been
alive for more than 3 years now. Any good suggestions/solutions?

ICES740O	MV Gardline Endurer	Commercial survey vessel
occasionally
                                        chartered by NERC (eg JASIN78)
------------------------------------------------------------------------
SR: We have no data or information on this ship, and can accept the code
740O, and this code is not in use by NODC either.
(I don't like this combination of '0O', it is very risky!)

Any call sign or additional information available?

ICES740P	RV Coastal Guardian	Research Ship, Environment
Agency,
                                        National Marine Service
Environmental
                                        Monitoring.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
SR: Problems!
ICES allocated 74G1 to the Coastal Guardian, call sign MQJT3 in February
2005 on request from CEFAS, UK. They used this ship for collecting
samples
between 1999-2003.

NODC has allocated 74G1 to the Aldgate.

Platform id: 10519
Name: Aldgate
NODC Code: 74G1
OC5 Code: 8763

I have no information on the Aldgate, do you Mitch have any?
Before we know, we can't decide what to do I am afraid.

ICES740Q	HMS Echo	H87, Multi-role survey vessel.Owned MOD,
operated by VT. Launched Mar 2002.
                                CallSign GAAC
------------------------------------------------------------------------
SR: We have problems again!
In June 2004 ICES allocated the code 74E4 to the HMS Echo, call sign
GAAC, year in service 2003, information and request came from UK
Hydrographic Office, Taunton. (The H87 is the vessel ID number).

NODC has used this code for the Erebus.
Platform id: 9776
Name: EREBUS,
NODC Code:74E4
OC5 Code: 8143

Do you Mitch have any information about the Erebus? Is it a new ship,
when are the data from, and do you have a call sign?

If it is the very old Erebus (Antarctic expedition with James Clark Ross
in the 1840s, I think it is best to change this code, rather than for
the
HMS Echo. It might be an idea then to make Roy's suggested code 740Q
the code for the Erebus instead?
Any other suggestions?

ICES740R	HMS Enterprise	H88 Multi-role survey vessel. Owned MOD.
Operated by VT. Launched Apr 2002.
                                CallSign GXUH
------------------------------------------------------------------------
SR: More problems!
In June 2004 ICES allocated 74E5 to the HMS Enterprise, call sign GXUH,
year in service 2004. Information and request came from UK Hydrographic
Office, Taunton. (The H88 is the vessel ID number).

NODC has used 74E5 for the Rattle Snake:
Platform id: 9781
Name: Rattle Snake
NODC Code:74E5
OC5 Code: 8148

Again Mitch, do you have any information about the Rattle Snake.
Is it a new ship, when are the data from, do you have a call sign etc?

I have found information of an old HMS Rattlesnake (note one word only)
making an expedition in the 1840s or so. If this is the ship, I suggest
we use Roy's suggested code 740R for the Rattle Snake/Rattlesnake...

I would rather not change the code for the HMS Enterprise...

ICES740S	HMSML Gleaner	MOD Hydrographic Sqadron, Coastal Survey
                                Launch. Commissioned 1983. In service
                                as at Jan 06.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
SR: Royal Navy Vessels (The vessel ID number is H86), but I can't find
the call sign.
We can agree to the code to become 740S, and this code is also available
on the NODC list.

ICES740T	GRV Newton	MOD, Royal Maritime Auxiliary Service,
built 1976, major conversion 1993 and
2000
------------------------------------------------------------------------
SR: I don't know what GRV means, we don't have data or ROSCOPs for this
ship
either. I have found the call sign to be GURN, and can agree to the
suggested code as 740T, BUT NODC has a RMAS Newton coded as 7440.

Platform id: 10375
Name: RMAS Newton
NODC Code: 7440
OC5 Code: 8578

We need to know more about this RMAS Newton. If it is the same ship, the

NODC code as 7440 should be used instead of the suggested code of 740T.
Have you Mitch any additional information, then please let us know.
