Hi Suzanne,
Next thing to sort out is the remains of my brief misguided spell allocating UK codes at BODC. There are 6 codes that I have that you don't.
One of these is uncontroversial, unless Mitch has used the codes for something else:
740E FV Challenger (FV chartered by MAFF)
Then we come to the Scotia problem. Basically DAFS/SOAFD/FRS and their precursors have operated four vessels under the name Scotia. Two of these hopefully won't be a problem as they are new to our sphere. These are:
746S SY Scotia (Steam yacht used by DAFS predecessors 1902-1905)
747S FRV Scotia (research vessel active from 1948 until 1971)
The solution I have adopted in BODC is to map the existing code (74SC) to the vessel in use between 1971 and 1998. I think (after misguided agreement from us) that this code is used in ICES for both this vessel and the new one that started work in 1998. I would strongly suggest that you now split this into two codes - I've used 748S for the new hull, but this could be changed if it's a problem. I know this is a pain as data maked up with the wrong ship code will need fixing- I've been there and done it!
This leaves the more controversial issue of RRS Shackleton and RV Corystes. This comes down to whether we need a new code for a ship if its governance changes significantly (ie it is transferred to a totally different organisation). Usually when this happens, the ship is renamed and we have no doubts about setting up a new record. However, there were these two examples where the name remained the same and after much thought I came to the conclusion that it would be better to set up new codes. Consequently, I have
740J for Corystes after she was sold by MAFF to DARDNI (who are now known as AFBI)
740K for Shackleton when she was being used as a BAS base supply ship.
Could we agree to adopt these (or alternatives if they've been used for something else)?
Cheers, Roy.
