by the U. California at San Diego.

 HMS Loch Fada; operated from 1943 - 1970 when scrapped.  - NODC code 74LF
Lough Foyle; built 1974 ;  research vessel; operated by the Department 
of Agriculture and Rural Development for Northern Ireland;
  radio call sign GYAR; NODC code 74LG

Hi Marilynn,

Container ship is a type of merchant vessel.  You could use 'ship' but 'vessel of opportunity' is possibly better as that indicates a merchantman returning oceanographic data.
