Dear Marilynn,

There are currently three entries in the code tables for the ship name 'Kaiyo'

49B5 - no additional information
49BE - callsign 8LYT
49XK - callsign 8LYT

Somehow, I think we have a problem as two of the callsigns are the same.  

Fran has spent most of the day looking for information on Kaiyo.  Her efforts have determined that there have been 3 Japanese coastguard vessels:

1948-05 to 1964-03 callsign JKOY pennant MH01
1964-03 to 1993-09 callsign 8LYT pennant HM06
1993-10 to present callsign JGBF pennant HL05

These all seem to have been active collecting some kind of oceanographic data. Oceanic have mapped code 49XK to JGBF.  

There is a 61m JAMSTEC research vessel callsign JRPG built in 1985 and still operational, which I need for POGO.

In addition there is a salvage barge, a training ship and a cargo ship called Kaiyo (the latter used to be called Kaiyo Maru) that are maybe of less importance to us.

So, what do we do?  

The main thing I need is a clean new code for the JAMSTEC ship (JRPG) - fairly urgent.
  
Changing the callsign to 49XK to JGBF to come into line with Oceanic would also seem sensible.  
This leaves 49BE for 8YLT.
  
What about 49B5 - multiple hulls or JKOY (if multiple hulls then should we have a new code for JKOY?).
