I apologize for the silence which was due to a deadline in another project. But I have good news! We have hired a new data manager who will start before Christmas. He will also be involved in this project.

Now I will continue with German codes:

06A3 has been designated as a multiple hull code for the Atair. It has been split into 2 codes: 06A7 and 06A8.

I hadn't realised thatthe changes I'd found were to do with reunification.  However, I think we still need two codes to indicate the change of governance, particularly as the callsign changes or we'll get ourselves in a right mess!

There are a number of German ships called Planet including a new one which no one has requested a code for. In order to avoid confusion later, I am also suggesting a code for the new Planet which according to Lloyds is also a research vessel. If anyone has objections to this please let me know.

although I was surprised that after 06W1 and 06W2 not, as expected, 06W3

The reason for 06NI was that our American friends had already used it for WH3 and so by following them we save them having to make changes to their system with little cost to anybody else.

  We have assigned these codes which are included *in* our data .  We no 
longer do this but as you can see, we cannot go back and re-code these.
   A lot of the previous (recent) suggestions are these re-numbering.  
We cannot change 06WH  and 06HW.

Hi Platform group,

In general, I try to keep in mind that we need to:

1) keep the use of extra codes down to a minimum
2) allow databases to keep their own codes intact
3) allow tracking to detail data via multiple hull codes in the ICES code tables
4) keep tracking as simple as possible
5) remember that there is no information implied in any code and the 2 digit codes have limited numbers available.

So, sometimes the coding may not be as straightforward as first expected.

Dear Platform group,
 
Now that the German Planet(s) with call signs DRAY and DSCZ have turned out to be the same vessel, the 06PL designation as "multiple hull" is not necessary. I have, however, already entered the codes in our database and can not change the code suggestions. 
 
06PL will therefore have the following attributes:
 
<name>Planet</name> <platform>research vessel</platform> Notes>Same vessel as 06PC and 06P2, multiple call signs </notes> 
 
There are a number of codes that refer to the same vessel. We have added a linking table in RECO so that these can be easier to track. We have planned to develop an interface to show the "multiple hull" and "same vessel" links in 2008.

There are a number of German ships called Planet including a new one which no one has requested a code for. In order to avoid confusion later, I am also suggesting a code for the new Planet which according to Lloyds is also a research vessel. If anyone has objections to this please let me know.
