Hello Alexey,
I am starting work on the information you have sent to me. You will notice that I have copied this message for information to an e-mail list of people who are trying to sort out problems with ship codes, so please do not "reply all" to this message (you cannot currently post messages to that list - should you want to I could arrange it).
I will start with the five MHI/IBSS vessels.
Akademik A. Kovalevskiy (90EK) Data from 1981 to 1991
Professor Vodyanitsky (90V2) Data from 1980 to 2005
Mikhail Lomonosov (90ML) Data from 1957 to 1992
Akademik Vernadskiy (90VE) Data from 1969 to 1992
Professor Kolesnikov (90CK) Data from 1982 to 1995
The first problem that I have to solve is that for each of these we potentially have two flags - USSR and then Ukraine from 1992 but the current rules for ship codes are that if the flag changes then a new ship code is required. However, if we look at the 'data return dates' three of the ships ceased activity in 1991/92, indicating no activity under the Ukranian flag.
Consequently I intend to proceed as follows:
1) Add the information you supplied for all five ships to the ICES system and place the USSR (90xx) codes in C174.
2) Request new Ukranian codes for Professor Vodyanitsky and Professor Kolesnikov to cover the period from 1992, tagged with the information you have given me.
Do you know whether the callsigns you supplied apply to USSR governance, Ukranian governance or both?
I will also add the information that you gave me for the vessels with Ukranian ICES codes (there are about 12 of these) and add them to C174.
Finally, I will discuss a possible short-term fix with Anne and Dick to see if we can find a way to prevent ship code issues blocking your production of CSR forms.
Cheers, Roy.

Subject: CSR Ships
Dear Roy,
We send you the information concerned the first five vessels of MHI and IBSS (see the attached file CSR_Ships.doc) However, our data base keeps a lot of information on vessels that can be hardly identified because of the following reasons.
1. Some coastal hydrometeorological stations conduct measurements in the coastal waters just on boats and it is not possible to present the necessary information about them to CSR.
2. Our data base contains a lot of archival data referred to the period of the USSR. Many measurements were done by naval ships and to get the necessary information about them is very problematic if it is possible at all.
3. A part of research cruises were accomplished aboard vessels rented for only one or two cruise. At present they may have changed their owners and even their names. So, it seems rather difficult to find any information about them.
In the attached file Ships.xls I send the information on how many of vessels worked in the Black Sea and in what periods of time. You can judge yourself what number of cruises will not be most likely included into CSR.
