Hi Marilynn,

This is more than just a typographic spelling error. There is widespread confusion over the correct spelling for this ship, to the extent that Google offers Gardline Locator as an alternative when Gardline Locater is requested.  Problem is that locator is better English than locater.  However, when we look at the picture captioned Gardline Locator at http://eastcoasters.fotopic.net/c1527428.html we can clearly see that Lloyds has it right and the caption has it wrong!  

I can't see any problem in simply correcting the spelling.

in total there are three Doggerbanks. As we just expect data from the 
Doggerbank DJDS there should be no problem, the Lloyds Doggerbank is now 
named Lummetje, thus there is just one Doggerbank in B?sum..

		old swedish cutter, ex Irland, decommissioned ca 1990
- Doggerbank DJDS callsign, no IMO, everything ok as in my request

I think we have the original paper ROSCOPs - I'll check when I get back to work to see whether they help.  Conversations with Chris Read who was at IMER Edinburgh/Plymouth back in the 70s and is still working at SAHFOS indicate that the ship occupying OWS INDIA (which is a point on a map and not a platform) was Weather Adviser/Admiral Fitzroy. Knowing what route BH1933 is would help - does Don or anyone at NODC have any idea?  If it's Clyde to OWS INDIA I think we have adequate proof that Fitzroy and Admiral Fitzroy are one and the same.  If it's not then we have two different ships...

Dear All,

I think that we are dealing with 2 different ships.

According to the ICES Oceanographic Data Lists and Inventories No. 40, Weather Adviser was one of a number of the Ocean Weather Ships. Her first voyage was between 2 and 24 October 1960 from the UK (Greenock, on the Clyde) to the OWS INDIA position. She also went to the OWS JULIETT and OWS KILO positions. This lasted until November 1975. OWS INDIA and JULIETT did not continue beyond the end of 1975. Then in March 1977, she was recommissioned as Admiral Fitzroy, and continued the same task as before, but now visiting the OWS LIMA position, and operated this route until the end of 1981, prior to being scrapped in 1982. The call sign for Weather Adviser is MDBE, presumably the call sign remained the same when she was renamed. The Weather Adviser ship code 74WA has been around since 1975 and probably earlier.

Now to the other ship, Fitzroy. BH1933 does not refer to a route, but to Bulletin Hydrographique (the ICES publication where everyone published their data) for 1933. There you can find 19 stations linked to a vessel called Fitzroy (74FZ), data collected to the east of the Shetland Islands. The same data are at NODC, also fortunately linked to 74FZ. I have not found out any details of this Fitzroy, but I would guess that the data were collected by the Marine Lab in Aberdeen. I will see if I can find any details, but as there is no other data linked to this vessel either at ICES or NODC, I would guess it was chartered.

I think that GTSPP has incorrectly linked Fitzroy, 74FZ, to the call sign MDBE in their code list, but as neither ship has been operating in their time frame, it should be a simple fix to sort the code out.
