Hi Marilynn,

I think we have the original paper ROSCOPs - I'll check when I get back to work to see whether they help. Conversations with Chris Read who was at IMER Edinburgh/Plymouth back in the 70s and is still working at SAHFOS indicate that the ship occupying OWS INDIA (which is a point on a map and not a platform) was Weather Adviser/Admiral Fitzroy. Knowing what route BH1933 is would help - does Don or anyone at NODC have any idea? If it's Clyde to OWS INDIA I think we have adequate proof that Fitzroy and Admiral Fitzroy are one and the same. If it's not then we have two different ships...

Cheers, Roy.

Subject: UNITED KINGDOM - FITZROY or WEATHER ADVISER/ADMIRAL FITZROY

Dear Platform Group,

Does anyone have information concerning the WEATHER ADVISER from UNITED KINGDOM when it was the "Admiral Fitzroy" or information concerning 74FZ the "FITZROY"? We are trying to determine if 74FZ - "Fitzroy" is really the "Admiral Fitzroy".

Existing Code : 74FZ
Name : FITZROY
Flag : UNITED KINGDOM - GB (ISO Country Code)

Existing Code : 74WA
Name : WEATHER ADVISER
Flag : UNITED KINGDOM - GB (ISO Country Code)
Platform Class : Vessel at fixed position - Includes light vessels and weather ships
Commissioned Date : 1960
Decommissioned Date : 1976
Notes : previous_pennant K386. Ocean weather ship occupying Station INDIA. Was HMS Amberley Castle K386 (castle-class corvette) and became Weather Adviser in 1960. Renamed Admiral Fitzroy in 1976 and scrapped in 1982.
Notes: Previous Name : HMS Amberley Castle

Important Comments (Resolve Conflict!):

Question: Is 74FZ 'Fitzroy' and Weather Adviser (under the name Admiral Fitzroy) the same? Are there OWS INDIA records linked to 74FZ or any other information?

(added by: Roy Lowry - 12/05/2009 00:00:00)

OWS India is not linked to code 74FZ. OWS India and "Admiral Fitzroy" have both been reported in CSR's from the Institute for Marine Environmental Research (IMER), Edinburgh. 74FZ and 74WA have existed as codes at least since 1996. NOAA GTSSP has call sign MDBE for 74FZ Fitzroy. "Fitzroy" is linked to data for 19 stations from route BH1933. No other information available. Not enough information to conclude they are the same platform.

Can anyone help?
