[Platforms] Test and UNITED STATES - Roy O. HALE

Hi Roy,

The email was actually a test of the output from the database to the standard email form and not intended for the platform group. The original email concerning Roy O. Hale was sent out in January to the platform group and also concerns the NODC deletion of 31OJ which ICES does not want to delete.

Did you note the conflict concerning the deletion of 31OJ in this email or should we make all conflicts more obvious? Please also read the initial email to comment on this: See below.

Thanks,
Marilynn

Subject: [Platforms] US Roy O. HALE

Dear Platform Group,

Don at NODC has discovered that there are two codes on the ICES list for the same US vessel, the Roy O. Hale. The codes are 31OJ and 3143. Note that only 3143 is used at NODC who decided some time ago to delete their "31OJ". To avoid deleting a code - unless someone objects - I will flag these codes as being the same vessel.

Note that the name for 3143 has been changed from "R.O'Hale" to "Roy O.Hale" and the name for 31OJ has been changed from "R.O.Hale" to "Roy O. Hale".

Code: 3143 and 31OJ

<name>ROY O. HALE</name>
<callsign>NHEG</callsign> <title>USS</title> <pennant>DER-336</pennant> <platformclass>Naval vessel</platformclass>
<commissioned>3 February 1944</commissioned> <decommissioned>11 July 1946</decommissioned>
<notes>WOD Code 2458; reclassified and converted to DER-336, 21 October 1955; Recommissioned 29 January 1957, Decommissioned 15 July 1963. Stricken 1 August 1974; data archived at NODC by this platform was collected between 1957 and 1963.</notes>

Don, for this special case, I would prefer to have the decommissioned date as 15 July 1963 to span the entire period and have the specific details in the notes. Another option would be that NODC reinstates 31OJ for the fist commissioned dates of the vessel. What do you prefer?

Cheers,
Marilynn

Hi Marilynn,

My view on this would be to use 3143 to span 29 January 1957 to 15 July 1963 with no entry covering 1944 to 1957. That way the commissioned/decommissioned dates provide the best possible check against oceanographic activity assigned to her. We're only really concerned with oceanographic metadata not a complete ship history database. Her history 1944-1957 can of course be covered in the 'notes' section.

Should evidence of oceanographic activity prior to 1957 come to light then the commissioned date would need to be revised (but I consider this unlikely).

Cheers, Roy.

Hi everyone,

This code already exists. There is a question concerning decommissioned dates to be resolved with NODC.

As you can see, we are making the final adjustments to our new Platform Code Request Application. If you have requests, please enter them on the web. You will receive login information within the next few days.

Best regards,

Marilynn

Dear Platform Group,
A request has come in for a code for the vessel Roy O. HALE from UNITED STATES

Suggested Code : 3143
Name : Roy O. HALE
Flag : UNITED STATES - US (ISO Country Code)
Call Sign : NHEG
Title : USS
Platform Class : Naval vessel
Pennant : DER-336
Commissioned Date : 1944-02-03
Decommissioned Date : 1946-07-11
Notes : WOD Code 2458; reclassified and converted to DER-336, 21 October 1955; Recommissioned 29 January 1957, Decommissioned 15 July 1963 Stricken 1 August 1974; data archived at NODC by this platform was collected between 1957 and 1963. Platform name corrected from R.O'Hale to Roy O.Hale.

RELATED COMMENTS:

Conflict to resolve: Commissioned/decommissioned dates do not span the years specified in the notes.

ICES prefers decommissioned date as 15 July 1963 to span the entire period and have the specific details in the notes.

NOTE: 31OJ and 3143 are the same vessel. NODC has deleted code 31OJ. Another option would be that NODC reinstates 31OJ for the first commissioned dates of the vessel.
