[Platforms] codes

Dear Taco and Platform Group,
I get this question a lot after I have proposed a code. It's good that you sent it to the whole group so we can use it as a reminder and start a discussion.
There are a number of points that we all should be thinking about:
· we are working towards removing semantics from codes
· we will eventually run out of codes and will have to modify our systems to adapt to change
· we may have to abandon the country code as the first 2 digits of the ship code very soon
· we may have to expand the length of the codes to greater than 4 digits
I assign codes randomly according to what is available at ICES and NODC. Sometimes they fit with the names and sometimes not. There are over a hundred Smit-Lloyd vessels, and many of them have 2 or 3 additional names once they are sold a few times. If they all are collecting data, we will need codes for those data collection periods and we will soon run out of codes.
The first step could be to abandon the country code as the first 2 digits thus opening up a lot of potential codes. This suggestion caused a problem for some of you when we suggested it last time. How are things now? How many of you would have trouble with that if we adopted it this year?
Cheers,
Marilynn

Subject: RE: [Platforms] NETHERLANDS - Smit-Lloyd 72
Dear Platform Group,
I am just wondering whether the coding scheme works with ship names like Smit-Lloyd 72.
The proposed Code now is: 64SL.
However, with a name like Smit-Lloyd 72, we may expect at least 71 other Smit-Lloyds, and possibly many more (it's a big company!). What to do with those vessels?
Or did I miss something and am I making foolish comments?
Cheers,
Taco
