I agree that Jan Mayen ought to be categorized as a Research Vessel.

In the Norwegian ship register this is registered in 1992:

For you non native Norwegian speakers FORSKNINGSFARTØY = research vessel

Dear All,

I would question the categorisation of Jan Mayen as a fishing vessel.  My understanding of a fishing vessel is a ship that is mainly used for commercial fishing that gets chartered to do occasional research work.  However, since 1992 (and possibly in the 4 years previous) the Jan Mayen has been involved in the full-time collection of many different types of oceanographic data. This  may include trawling for fisheries research, which requires registration with the authorities as a fishing vessel, but as commercial fishing is not her primary purpose I would call her a research vessel.

Do you agree with this?
