[Platforms] SEDCO/BP 471 - JOIDES Resolution

Dear all,

Thank you for the additional information, most of which we already have. Although it seems to be clear, details from other sources which we have access to give conflicting information. I will create a code for the JOIDES Resolution and will base it on their website and ignore the other sources which state a different date for the name change SEDCO/BP 471 to JOIDES Resolution.

To clarify our procedure, we have searched the internet, checked ca. 10 standard websites, checked ROSCOPS and data at ICES, checked a paid-for source, checked license agencies and book sources. Unfortunately these give conflicting information that only people who have first hand knowledge of the vessels and data can resolve.

Cheers,
Marilynn

Wikipedia has some information about JOIDES Resolution - see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JOIDES_Resolution - there are also some links to the ship's web site. There was a recent refit - and she is about to set sail for her next cruise in about 18 hours time..

There is a fact sheet at: www.iodp.org/weblinks/.../quot-JOIDES-Resolution-quot-Fact-Sheet/

And other web sites including http://iodp.tamu.edu/publicinfo/drillship.html

There are pictures at: http://www.shipspotting.com/gallery/photo.php?lid=1223611

There are some ROSCOPs at ICES for JOIDES Resolution and several other Resolutions, including a US one active in 1976-77, but no sign of any ship codes, but a call sign of GBZX - I think this one is 32RS.

JOIDES Resolution is on www.researchvessels.org (Delaware), with a call sign of D5BC, but no ship code. No sign of the other Resolution there, but there is mention of it on the Calcofi web pages (www.calcofi.org/cruises/sec-shipinfo/../338-shiocodes7.html) and at NODC (www.nodc.noaa.gov/General/NODC-Archive/platformlist.txt).

So it seems clear which is which and there is plenty of information about JOIDES Resolution.

Cheers,
Lesley

Hi again,

I've asked contacts in marine geology for any information they might have.

The fact that there is data from 32RS before 1978 means that she is not JOIDES Resolution, so let's forget that idea before we all get confused and just set up a code for JOIDES Resolution.

What was the vessel type change? In Lloyds? If so, I would argue that since 1985 she has been engaged in drilling cores for scientific research and therefore as far as we're concerned she has been a reserach vessel since then, making multiple JOIDES Resolution codes unnecessary.

Cheers, Roy.

Hi all,

There are data stating "RESOLUTION" from before the JOIDES Resolution was built as the SEDCO/BP 471 (See US RESOLUTION email). If the JOIDES Resolution is 32RS then there is another "Resolution" that needs a code. See the US RESOLUTION email sent today.

The JOIDES Resolution is still active but she was rebuilt (again) not too long ago and changed vessel type. This may mean a new code is needed but more information is needed.

There are 2 sources which state that the name changed to JOIDES Resolution in 1996. I will make further enquiries.

If anyone has documentation it would be much appreciated.

Cheers,
Marilynn

Hi Marilynn,

This isn't making total sense to me.

When did SEDCO/BP 471 get renamed to JOIDES resolution? My understanding from the IODP site is that it was when she got converted to science in 1985.=
If so, SEDCO/BP 471 sould have a decommissioned date of January 1985.

Now we come to JOIDES Resolution. Is this the US-flagged Resolution (32RS)? Or do we need a new code? If somebody has ROSCOPS for 32RS, it should be easy to determine as JOIDES Resolution cruises have a fairly unique activity pattern (depp-sea drilling). Whatever the decision she should have a commissioned date of January 1985 and as fas as I can see she's still active (http://joidesresolution.org/blog), wherease the notes indicate activity ceased in 2003.

JOIDES Resolution is a very important ship to science so we need to get this sorted.

Cheers, Roy.
