[Platforms] CANADA - CALANUS II - CALANUS

Dear Marilynn and Don

I doubt very much that 18CN was created for the old Calanus.

I know from oral tradition that most people who use the Calanus II ship
refer to it simply as the Calanus, which may explain why it was entered
as Calanus in the first place, and not Calanus II.

I can also confirm that all pre-1991 bottle data with code 18CN, in our
database, which are from observation years 1970, 1973 and 1976, were
entered in our database prior to 1991, then modified in 1999 and 2000.
The modification was likely to add the new platform code, though it was
the wrong ship. It was a mistake.

I would rather (if possible) try to fix the faulty datasets here, in
ICES' bottle db and in WOD rather than designating 18CN as multiple hull
code.

The three cruises which were erroneously associated to 18CN here are:
180470001, 180473003 and 180476001 (in our cruise numbering scheme).

The WOD cruises which would need fixing would be: CA012705, CA012706,
CA011076, CA093937, CA012708, CA012709, CA095492, CA012710, CA096105,
CA000137, CA000279, CA000116, CA001260, CA016146 and CA016150

I can do a query in ICES if you want

Please let me know what you think

Regards

Mathieu

Dear Platform Group,

Due to new information, the status of code 18CN (Calanus/Calanus II) has
been changed to "Conflict". NOAA and ICES are looking into the issue and
will contact you when it is resolved.

Best regards,

Marilynn

General Comments:

Conflict flag removed

IMO Information confirmed in Miramar.

I noticed that the code 18CN has been created in 2006 for a Canadian
ship named "CALANUS". The name is incomplete and therefore ambiguous.
The full ship name is "CALANUS II", could you please update it ? It is a
medium-sized vessel that is multi-taskable to fishery and oceanographic
missions, as well as geological and hydrographic surveys, built in 1991.

The problem with the current name, "CALANUS", is that it is the name of
a 15 m research vessel built in 1948. I don't think it is still used; it
doesn't look in very good shape:

Nevertheless we have historical data collected by the "first" CALANUS
and more recent data collected by the CALANUS II and we need not confuse
them.
