[Platforms] UNITED KINGDOM - ACT 6 (Info needed)

Hi Marilynn,

I have no specific memories of this ship. Fran compiled a folder containing all the information she could find on UK vessels. I'll e-mail Paul telling him where this might be in the office so he can have a look, but I strongly suspect there won't be anything as prior to 1990 all VOS met and XBT data were dealt with by the Hydrographic Office not MIAS (as BODC was known then). Ship code registrations tended to be done by Tom Dalzell (may be misspelled) dealing directly with Harry.

The best source of information we have on this ship is http://www.bluestarline.org/act/act6.html which has photographs showing her to be London registered in 1990 and Nassau registered in Nov 1991 and Jan 1992 (when she was being repainted as Queensland Star). The text on the site also states that she was transferred from ACT to Blue Star on 10/10/1991 and renamed. Presumably that is when the registration changed. So, it looks possible she was sailing around for 3 months with the wrong name painted on her hull!

I totally agree that the callsign C6JZ3 is wrong for ACT 6 - it is virtually certain to be the callsign for her under the name Queensland Star under Bahamian flag. If we can't find out what her callsign was under the UK flag then I would suggest deleting it. It isn't vital as the data from this ship in WOD are much later than 1991.

Cheers, Roy.

Photographs of ACT 6 / Queensland Star 2. Dick Young stood by at Vegesack for some time as Chief Officer, along with Chief Engineer Graham White before they were replaced before trials by Port Line personnel as this was the start of the split with Cunard.

I have now retired but will continue to be active through an Emeritus Fellowship using this e-mail address.

Dear Platform Group,

Does anyone know of a UK call sign for ACT 6? The call sign is incorrect for a UK flag and it is known that some call signs were added after the codes were created. I suspect that a UK call sign existed when the ship was first registered. http://www.arrl.org/international-call-sign-series. This code is marked pending.

Additional information has come in for the vessel ACT 6<http://vocab.ices.dk/Request/Default.aspx?id=4925> from GB: UNITED KINGDOM.
