*An Environmental Marine Information System for Europe*

Over the last years, the JRC- IES has developed in the context of its
institutional activities a number of large spatial data sets describing
physical and biological processes in the European regional seas. In
order to improve and enlarge the use of this research information the
IES has developed an Environmental Marine Information System (EMIS).
EMIS is a simple and easy-to-use mapping tool application, developed for
the publication and dissemination of European marine information via the
web. The application allows the provision of scientific information,
through the web, by way of geo-referenced maps (created in real-time),
and supplies the users with basic navigation and interrogation tools.
Due to the application's optimized size, the process to create and query
maps is extremely fast and simple, resulting in a very practical and
useful high level user application.

The Environmental Marine Information System offers the possibility of
providing spatial and temporal information supporting the assessment and
monitoring of European regional seas like eutrophication indicators and
related physical and biological marine variables (e.g. sea surface
temperature, chlorophyll-a concentration, mixed layer depth, primary
production, etc.) derived from satellite remote sensing and/or numerical
modelling. The information system provides a wide set of tools which
allows to navigate, browse and interrogate the map in different ways.
This allows the user to perform its own assessment of the status and
trends in the European regional seas or in a marine sub-area of its
choice. The further developments of the system will also seek synergies
with the advancements of the Water Information System for Europe (WISE)
which does not include, at the moment, marine information. For more
