Dear Danielle,

Many thanks for reaching out to us.

Regarding your first question, I think you can defend both points of view given the current dataset:

- A similar approach is being used for e.g. the Southern and Indian Ocean, where there is both a sub-region and region with the same name, the region containing more sub-regions. It would therefore not be an exception and you could keep it as it is. If you would change it, would you then re-evaluate these other names too?

- I have had a look around and several sources indeed refer to this sub-region (boundaries can differ) as the Central Arctic, so I think it would also be defendable to change the name with sufficient sources to back this change up.

Regarding your second question and the Global Oceans and Seas, this dataset is not based on the SeaVoX dataset but the IHO Limits of Oceans and Seas (https://www.marineregions.org/files/S23_1953.pdf) and will consequently not be affected by such a change.

Hope this helps! If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact us again.

Kind regards,

Britt Lonneville

Subject: Request for updates to the Arctic Ocean region and subregion [BODCNVS-1569]

Hello,

Hope you are all well. Currently in the SeaVox Salt and Fresh Water Body Gazetteer, the Arctic Ocean subregion (shown in yellow in the attached image) has the same name as the overall Arctic Ocean region. The Arctic Ocean region includes all of the various subregions.

There is currently a single entry in C19 for the main Arctic Ocean region, but no entry for the subregion. We have had a request for the name of the Arctic Ocean subregion to be updated to 'Central Arctic Ocean', and for this to be added to C19, which would allow differentiation between the Arctic Ocean region and Arctic ocean subregion.

We would be willing to make this change, but wanted to check with you to see if you had any objection?

The user has also requested that the main Arctic Ocean region be subsequently renamed to 'Arctic Ocean - Nordic Seas', to indicate that this includes all of the various subregions. We are aware that you also have a Global Oceans and Seas file: https://www.marineregions.org/sources.php#goas - which has the Arctic Ocean as defined in the SeaVoX data set. Again we would appreciate hearing your opinion on whether we should be making this change.

If you could contact us as soon as possible that would be great.
Best wishes,
Dani
