[Medin_dacwg] Value of marine data. ... survey nearly ready to go!

Dear MEDIN DACs,

thanks so much to all DACs who have agreed to be part of this exciting opportunity to partner with the OECD/GOOS to carry out an independent survey of the users of marine data. I received over 50 comments from the DACS on the draft survey and OECD have made updates to accommodate as many of the suggestions as they could.

The survey will go live on Monday  11th May and will be live for at least 6 weeks.

 MEDIN are planning to do a fortnightly communication hit as follows and it would be great if you could coordinate activities around this if possible:

Would you like the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) to carry out an independent survey of the users of your marine data?

I hope you and your colleagues are keeping well. As you know, the MEDIN Core Team have adapted to working from home and are continuing to drive forward MEDIN’s programme of work. For me, one strand of this means the exciting project with OECD and GOOS looking at the value chain of marine data…

You may recall I contacted you in February to enquire whether you would be interested in an opportunity to assess the value of your marine data holdings. I did not hear back from you then but I wanted to give you another chance to get involved in this exciting joint project with OECD/MEDIN and The Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS).

OECD have designed a brief questionnaire (with input from MEDIN and GOOS) and we are now ready for the participating MEDIN Data Archive Centres to test the questionnaire and let us know if they feel anything is missing.

The attached document describes the project in a bit more detail and includes the text used in the survey. Please let me know asap if you would like to be involved in this project or want to know more. The more of the MEDIN DACs that get involved in the project, the more complete a picture we can obtain of the uses of marine data.

If you do want to be involved, please use track changes in the attached document to note any gaps in the questionnaire. We’d also appreciate it if you could test the online version of the questionnaire to check for any outstanding bugs. Would you like the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) to carry out an independent survey of the socio-economic value of your marine data?

As you know, recent independent analysis found that the benefit to cost ratio of MEDIN’s services is approximately 8, indicating that “the benefits far outweigh the cost of providing the service”. This is an important step for understanding the value of marine data management and dissemination but doesn’t capture the value of the data itself to our users. MEDIN Data Archive Centres have the opportunity over the next 6 months to be involved in an international project looking to quantify the value of marine data. The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS, IOC-UNESCO) are working together on developing a pragmatic research programme focussed on valuing ocean observations, as to inform practitioners and policy-makers with original evidence-based analysis on the links between marine data and society.

The attached document describes the process that MEDIN/OECD/GOOS envisage. MEDIN will be the main contact point for your involvement in the project. Please let me know by 12th February whether your DAC is interested in participating in this exciting opportunity.

It would also be really useful to know if you have carried out any surveys of your data users over the past 2 years (see question in red in attachment).
