Dear MEDIN Colleagues,
Some of you may be aware of the recently published ‘The Future of Marine Geospatial Data Report’
https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/the-future-of-uk-marine-geospatial-data-report.
The report highlights 4 key priorities for the marine geospatial community, as identified by a group of marine stakeholders:
· Collaboration and coordination,
· Data standards,
· Data accessibility,
· Data collection.
Luckily for the marine community, we are not starting from scratch, and so the situation is not nearly as bleak as is painted in the report. As you know, the Marine Environmental Data and Information Network (MEDIN) has been hard at work over the past fourteen years addressing these priorities and actively pursuing solutions to some of the challenges raised in the report. Consequently, the UK boasts:
- A central hub for marine geospatial data, the MEDIN portal<https://portal.medin.org.uk/portal/start.php>.
- Access to over 16,000 datasets owned or managed by over 600 different organisations.
- A suite of community derived and managed data and metadata standards.
- A federated network of specialist Data Archive Centres, providing access to high quality data.
- Regular opportunities for marine geospatial data experts to collaborate.

Although it is disappointing that the report fails to recognise MEDIN’s major contributions in this area, I see this as an opportunity. By sharing MEDIN’s achievements with members of the marine community who may be less familiar with the network, we can increase collaboration and further enhance our services.
I’m keen to hear your opinions of the report and your views as to how we should respond.
Best wishes,
Clare
