Hi all,

We have engaged SeaZone to upgrade Metadata Maestro, providing usability and stability enhancements.

They are now nearly half way through the work and have released an interim, beta version of the tool for testing. I’m inviting you all to have a look at the tool and provide any feedback to myself, preferably before Thursday next week, so that I can collate and provide back to SeaZone. However, if you are unable to get to it during the week, I would still be interested to hear any feedback you have after this time. This is your opportunity to let us know your frustrations and help shape the next version of this tool to help make your life more efficient!

The links to download the 32 and 64 bit versions are at the bottom of this email chain. Please get in touch if you have any issues downloading or installing.

Please note that this is a test version of the tool, and as such may have stability issues and bugs. You are only licenced to use this for testing purposes, and this will expire in 2 weeks from today (25th April 2014). You will need to uninstall the current version of Maestro in order to install this one.

In the context of the above, please feel free to forward to relevant colleagues (Clare, could you forward this on to the MEDIN Standards Working Group please).

For context, we have asked SeaZone to look at the following (items that are included in this delivery are highlighted in bold):

A. Keywords – you should now be able to access the keyword search tool from within the form in the metadata editor; fuzzy search is performed by default, and if you select keywords from more than one vocabulary list and add them (rather than drag/drop), then new keyword nodes should be created automatically).

B. Rationalised menus – these should now be clearer and more navigable

C. Help menu – this should now be more functional, and includes the Maestro user guide.

D. Selecting the metadata profile - where this was a drop down box, and easy to accidentally change by scrolling when it was selected, thereby losing your work, there is now a button to stop this from happening.

E. Start up dialogue – The current welcome screen (if this does not appear for you, go to Metadata Tools>Options, and de-select the box “Do not show start up dialogue”) has been augmented by the addition of a start up dialogue giving you access to the most common tasks.

F. Workflow – this is yet to be implemented. This will make it simpler for the user to work through the forms, only showing relevant entry boxes, re-ordering the node tree, ensuring the tree is collapsed when you open the editor, rather than confusing and overwhelming the user, changing the names to be more consistent where sensible, and linked better to the error messages, removing the confusing red symbols and replacing with a simple (m) for mandatory, (o) for optional and (c) for conditional, creating new “next”, “previous” and “add new” (where relevant) buttons to each form

G. New node creation – Adding the required responsible parties, and pre-populating the required roles as default behaviour.

H. File Identifier – fix bug that overwrites fileID when you load an existing metadata record, create a better workflow around generating new file ID’s and making it more difficult to accidentally edit/overwrite/delete it.

I. Nil Reasons – making it easier to create nulls and a more consistent method.

J. Context Help – embedding help within the forms to allow the user to understand what’s required.

K. Application window behaviour – fixing movement of windows within the overall application window and tidying it up.

L. Search – looking into the addition of an index (populating results as you type) and dictionary test (e.g. “did you mean..”)

The next steps are to gather feedback on the items implemented so far (those in bold) and finalise these. In parallel, SeaZone will be working on the rest (the non-bold items – F-L). We’re aiming for a final public release in the early summer.

Let me know if you have any questions or concerns and I look forward to hearing your feedback.

Best regards,

Pete
