Steve,
Following on from your e-mail sent to some of us on Friday I was
speaking to Linda Noble & Christine Phillips. I think Christine is
going to speak to you later on, but we have a few queries:
1) I did ask Robert Gorter for this, but never got a reply, but could
we have some clarification of the UTL & what it covers?
2) What do Elsevier mean by "subscribed titles". Is it just those we
take as prints subs & then do they aggregate all NERC titles or do the
quotes just refer to each individual centre/survey's print subs?
3) Before we can say what our "bottom line" is we need to know the
costs of the options. Could you ask Elsevier to quote for access to
all print subs for NERC + access to all titles we actually downloaded
last year. We agree that there's a lot of material in the "freedom
collection" which is superfluous to our requirements, but think that
the above combination could cover most of what we want.
4) Re. your point about having just one designated IP address with
access to the "freedom collection" did that refer to a CEH one? Would
the rest of us then be able to request items via that route if we
wanted?
5) Regarding usage, speaking for POL at least, many of the titles
requested were for prints subs, although some of these were cancelled
as part of our pre-move planning for 2004. The remaining requests for
ScienceDirect though were for titles scattered between at least 3 of
their subject collections: Earth & Planetary Sciences, Environmental
Sciences & Engineering. Subscriptions only to one or more of these
though might be an option so we also need quotes for subscribed titles
+ each of the above. We won't take a decision on what we want though
until we can compare the costs!
Thanks,
Julia
