Dear Susanne,

I've had a chance to look at the HMS Scott issue:

I agree, lets leave HMS Scott as 74E6 - information and callsign are correct for this vessel.

74ST - Scott - I suspect I assumed this was HMS Scott since many of the ships on the historic list were indeed HMS vessels - this then created a duplicate for HMS Scott. I have no additional information regarding this vessel 'Scott' - I will remove the information/notes and place it in the list of vessels still to be researched. The callsign is indeed Noweigan, and I am not aware of its origin. I can tell you, however, that the callsign is no longer listed by ITU.

Regards
Frances

Dear Frances and all,

There is an error with the information/call sign notes for the SCOTT and
the HMS SCOTT.

We have at ICES and NODC had the code:

74ST for the SCOTT (no callsign information in versions of 1994 and
1998)
In the 2000 & 2003 versions the callsign became LNXZ3.

We also had a code for the other 'HMS Scott':

74E6 HMS SCOTT (callsign GCUP, year in service 1998).
This entry was added on request from Steve Lock, UK Hydrographic Office,
on 16 June 2004. He provided the call sign as GCUP and the year of
(start)
service as 1998.

This code was in conflict with the NODC code 74E6 which they used for
the
SAMARANG (operating in the 1840s). However, they agreed to make the code
for the SAMARANG become 740W, so this was a NEW entry on the ICES
version.

On 29 November this year you informed me of:

"ICES 74ST - HMS Scott - Callsign is GCUP and NOT LNXZ3"
and asked me to amend my records accordingly.

Then something went wrong, as the 74ST is NOT the 'HMS SCOTT', but
just 'SCOTT'.

I think the correct entries should be as:

74ST SCOTT Callsign LNXZ3

74E6 HMS SCOTT Callsign GCUP. year in service 1998 (170604 ICES added)
PLUS the information you provided to us on 29 November:
H131, Royal Navy hydrographic vessel. Launched Oct. 1996, still
active as
     at Jan 2006.)
This information we added on 24 October 2006.

Please let me know if you can agree to this.
For the time being I will leave the call sign LNXZ3 for the 74ST, but
think it is erroneous (Norwegian?)

Best wishes,

Susanne
