Hello again,
I sent my first mail to you at 16:17, but at the moment (17:17) I have
not
received it myself, so our email connection is indeed slow!
Here is the first part - many more to come the next days - of the BODC
codes,
which we need to solve.
All the below codes as ICES74?? and related comments are as suggested by
BODC.
Below the dashed line you will find my own (SR:) comments and possible
solution.
ICES74E3 RRS Discovery
------------------------------------------------------------------------
-----
SR: I expect that this is the NEW Discovery? If this is the case, she
was
built in 1962 and rebuilt in 1991/92 and has the call sign GLNE.
At ICES we have Discovery data from a 74DI (Discovery) and 74DS
(Discovery II), and we have allocated the suggested code 74E3 to the
European Seafarer.
However, we can accept to REMOVE this entry for the European Seafarer
(since
no data here and not allocated on a request) and use 74E3 for the new
RRS
Discovery. The 74E3 entry is then correct on the NODC list, but should
have
the prefix RRS added in the comments field as well as the call sign as
GLNE.
ICES74P2 RV Prince Madog UCNW research vessel 2001-
------------------------------------------------------------------------
-----
SR: BODC/NODC & ICES agreed back in August 2002 to continue with 74PD
for
the new Prince Madog (call sign ZNLJ5), since the former Prince Madog
(call sign GTQU) was sold to a private company in July 2001).
We at ICES then later in March 2004 allocated the code 74P2 to the Cast
Prospect. However, since BODC wish to have a separate code for the new
Prince Madog, we can agree to have the code 74P2 for the NEW RV Prince
Madog
(Call sign ZNLJ5) launched July 2001 and we will remove the Cast
Prospect entry. We can do this, since we can't find any information of
this
ship and we don't have the data either. We had some misinformation about
surface data and have allocated a code wrongly. Shame on us!
On the NODC list, the call sign is ZNLJ and should be corrected to
become
ZNLJ5.
ICES740B RV G A Reay
------------------------------------------------------------------------
SR: We have data from 74GD (George Reay at ICES & NODC) from 1986 & 1988
(10 stations), and I have found that between 1992 & 1993 the name
changed
from G. A. Reay to George Reay on the NODC/ICES code list.
The BODC suggested code 740B should therefore NOT be used, as it is the
same ship! Please change the name, so the entry will look like:
74GD G. A. Reay RV (Call sign in ROSCOP in 1986 was GYAM, should we
add this and any other info?).
I have found information that the G. A. Reay was built in 1968 and used
by
Torry Research until ca. 1980, then by UEA until 1984. Bought by Marrs
(www.j-marr.co.uk) in 1984, renamed Falklands Right 1/1997(NB!!),
renamed
Eastella 12/1997(NB!!), renamed Falklands Protector 1990 (74FP
Falklands Protector, call sign GYMA?), and then sold in 1993!
(NB!!) I strongly believe that the year 1997 mentioned here should be
1987
rather than 1997! We have 2 ROSCOP forms at ICES from the Eastella in
1988
and 1989 and the 10 stations mentioned under G.A Reay in 1988 are coded
as
74GD, but I think these stations are from the Eastella (see below).
ICES740A MV Eastella
------------------------------------------------------------------------
SR: We can accept the code 740A for the MV Eastella, and this code is
not
used by NODC either. (I guess that this is the in 12/1997 renamed G.A
Reay!)
Any call sign or time of operation?
ICES740C MFV Kings Cross
------------------------------------------------------------------------
SR: We have no data or information on the Kings Cross MFV, but 4 ROSCOPs
from 1988, 1994, 1995 and 1998. We can accept the code to become 740C.
This code is also free on the NODC list.
Any call sign or operation time etc. available?
ICES740D RV Nucella
------------------------------------------------------------------------
SR: We have no data from the Nucella, but in a UEA Technical Report 112
there is a RV Nucella which was in service from 1968-1980, could be the
same ship?
We can accept the code to become 740D. This code is also free on the
NODC list.
Any call sign or operation time etc. available?
ICES740F RV Tamaris PML coastal research vessel
------------------------------------------------------------------------
SR: We have no data or information on the Tamaris, and can accept the
code
to become 740F. This code is also free on the NODC list. I have found on
the
web, that the Tamaris was built in 1974 and the call sign was 2SWL.
ICES740G RV Squilla PML coastal research vessel
------------------------------------------------------------------------
SR: We have no data from the Squilla, but 3 ROSCOP forms from 1981
(Inst.of Oceanographic Sciences, IOS, Taunton). We can accept the
code to become 740G. This code is also free on the NODC list. Any call
sign
or operation time etc. available?
