Dear Helge, Peter & Chris,

In connection with the SeaDataNet project as well as our data strategy
to be a "hub", we are currently overhauling our ship codes.

These had gotten out of synch mostly due to lack of governance. To get
the codes back in synch and ensure facilities for their future
maintenance, we have been upgrading our code utility program (RECO), and
working closely with Roy Lowry of the BODC and Frances Mitchell of the
WDC-A. But as there are principle decisions which must be made, f.ex.,
how to handle duplicated codes and/or vessels. We would appreciate wider
input here - or to quote Roy:

"... before doing anything this fundamental I suggest that we expand the
membership of this list. I tried doing this at the last SeaDataNet TTT
meeting with the French and the Germans, but the promised nominations
for members never arrived. Julie, how about getting the joint chairs of
the ICES MDM to drum up support getting anybody who wants to be added to
the list to e-mail me and I will add them? I think getting somebody from
DOD and SISMER is particularly important. With more 'ears on' I'd be far
more comfortable with the value of decisions made."

I hope WGDIM can provide this expertise rather soon.
Kind regards,
Julie

Julie Gillin
