The 'code following name' rule was a misunderstanding from the past and a mistake I hope we will never make again.

Sadly, 'code following hull' doesn't work either!  Consider the recent case in the UK where RRS Charles Darwin (code 74AB) was sold and renamed Ocean Explorer.  We label ROSCOPs with the code and display the name.  So, if the code follows the hull every RRS Charles Darwin cruise ROSCOP in our collection is suddenly relabelled RV Ocean Explorer - confusing and highly undesirable.

I therefore feel that the rule should be:

'Code represents a hull operating under a name and a governance type'.  The 'governance type' bit is woolly and currently controversial, but it solves one of my problems.

Given this, what is your advice to Marilynn for G.O. Sars? 58GT is uncontroversial for Sarsen.  Should we keep 58GS for the same hull under the old name and give the new hull a new code?

I fully appreciate that disturbing old codes is risky, but the problem is that we are now trying to make our metadata work harder - such as my current problem of linking ROSCOPs to a vessel (i.e. hull) database.  Similar problems await us in the wings for applications that retireve the ROSCOP history for a given ship.  So, we've got to do something and the alternative to fixing past problems - setting up a totally new codebase - is far less appealing than the risk of confusion. If we keep communicating and can manage to work together then me might just pull it off.

Recoding of old established ship codes may cause a lot of confusion, 
and must be avoided if possible. The 58GT code should therefore be
restricted to the period when the ships name was actually "Sarsen"
(February 10, 2003 -> end of 2003 (removed from ordinary service
10/2003, sold abroad 12/2003)). The new G.O.Sars was registered 04/2003,
and started ordinary services in June 2003, so no overlap exists.

Like many other countries, the names of norwegian research wessels are
frequently reused, and some historic codes cover many ships. 
The vessel in qustion, LLZG G.O.Sars/Sarsen, was not the original one,
but replaced the original ship in 1970. However, with a few exceptions,
outdated RVs have not had a second life in the service of the science.

When the change G.O.Sars -> Sarsen was reported in 2003, we proposed
unchanged code for the old ship, and a different code for the new one.
However, the "codes follow the name" rule was strictly adhered to.
In the future, we strongly support a change from "follow the name" to
"follow the hull".
