[Platforms] Content Governance - splitting codes with multiple hulls - BEAUTEMPS-BEAUPRÉ

Dear All,

Michele requested an example of the ICES suggestion for handling the splitting of a code which refers to multiple hulls. The Beautemps-Beaupré is a good example:

35BB has been used for Beautemps-Beaupré but this code has been used in older data as well as newer data and there is confusion as to which hull is referenced in data and in CSRs. Therefore, new codes will be created in the SeaDataNet list here at ICES for all hulls using the name Beautemps-Beaupré where the single hull can be identified with dates of service etc..

35BB will remain in the list with its name "Beautemps-Beaupré" but all attributes will be removed. In the "notes" attribute, "multiple hulls" will be the only information. This allows everyone to continue using "35BB" in their own databases if they wish.

A new code, "35B5", will be created for the new ship with attributes: commissioned 2003, call sign FABB, pennant A758, Notes: built 2001.

35B5 will be linked to 35BB in the Shipcode list in RECO (http://www.ices.dk/datacentre/reco/reco.asp?sortby=Description&ref=315 <http://www.ices.dk/datacentre/reco/reco.asp?sortby=Description&ref=315> ). When someone has 35BB in data and need to link to a CSR, they would go to RECO. RECO should be developed to give a clearer view of the linking with attributes, but for now, the links can be seen by highlighting "35BB", then choosing the "Related Reference" list "Multiple Hull Tracking for SeaDataNet" on the right side of the screen. This will give a popup window with the links.

BEAUTEMPS-BEAUPRÉ

35B6
BEAUTEMPS-BEAUPRÉ
BEAUTEMPS-BEAUPRÉ

The attributes will be visible in the SeaDataNet Ship and Platform Codes list in RECO. For example:

35BB BEAUTEMPS-BEAUPRÉ<country>France</country><notes>Multiple hulls</notes>

35B5 BEAUTEMPS-BEAUPRÉ<country>France</country<callsign>FABB</callsign><commissioned>2003</commissioned><notes>Built 2001</notes>

35B6 BEAUTEMPS-BEAUPRÉ<country>France</country><platformclass>Naval vessel</platformclass><notes>In service 1946-1965. Weight: 2000t, Length: 95m</notes>

You also asked about the definition of pennant:
<pennant> - the code number carried by naval vessels that is usually painted on the side in large letters - e.g. RV Belgica (operated by the Belgian Navy) is A962.

If 35B5 is not a naval vessel, I question whether the Pennant number "A758" is correct for this new vessel.

Kind regards,
Marilynn

Subject: Re: [Platforms] France BEAUTEMPS-BEAUPRE

Dear All,

Sorry to be so late to answer but I just come back to-day from 2 weeks of holidays.

First of all, 35B5 is OK for the new BEAUTEMPS-BEAUPRE. We will make the changes in the database.
The BEAUTEMPS-BEAUPRE is a hydrographic ship owned by the French Hydrographic Office, so it is not a grey ship (military ship).
FABB call sign should be removed from the 35BB shhip, because I don't know what was the call sign of this ship at that time.

The story is a mistake on our side, when we received data from the new BEAUTEMPS-BEAUPRE we did not ask for a new code to ICES, I guess
just because we did not pay attention to the fact that the code referred to an old ship for which we only have one bottle data set from the fifties.

Concering the rule that ICES describe on Marilynn email from April 13, seems to be OK. Just to be sure
could you send an example for one multiple hulls ship? (because sometimes we misunderstand english words). for example one attribute is
previous_pennant : what does pennant mean?

Best regards,

Michèle

	Hi Marilynn,

It doesn't make any difference to me whether ships that have inherited codes get new codes or the new code goes to the old ship. All data markup in BODC is inside a relational database so changes are easy to make.

As this is a French ship my guess is that they have data from both hulls labelled '35BB' and will have to change something no matter what. However, before doing anything we must assess the impact on them. Michele is currently on holiday - back April 16. However, I have copied this e-mail to Gilbert Maudire to see if we can reach agreement sooner.

	Cheers, Roy.

Dear Michele, Roy and Mitch (35BB is on NODC list),

Celine Cordier has sent in the following information:
"There are two vessels named Beautemps Beaupre.
	- The first (1946-1965) was an hydrographic vessel of the French navy. Weight: 2000t, Length: 95m
	- The last was built in 2001 and is still working."

35BB Beautemps Beaupre has existed on the ICES list since at least 1998, and 35BB has data associated with it from 1959-1960 here at ICES. I have also found a note on the 1939 vessel but have not found associated data. I therefore cannot OK that 35BB is used for the new ship from 2001. If anyone has information that 35BB is currently being used for the new vessel, please let me know as I have not been able to find any linked data. I have not checked CSR's.

I propose a new code for the new French Beautemps-Beaupré: 35B5

Beautemps-Beaupré, ICES suggested code 35B5, commissioned 2003, call sign FABB, pennant A758, Notes: built 2001

Michele, please specify the platform for the new ship: should it be "Navy vessel"?

I plan to remove callsign FABB for 35BB as I believe this addition occurred in 2004. Please let me know by 16 April if the old vessel had call sign FABB.

	Kind regards,
	Marilynn

	Dear All,

As I try to rationalise the ship codes for POGO I keep running into the confusion caused by ships being renamed.

	Problem 1: Beautemps-Beaupré

We have code 35BB which seems to be connected to the current French naval survey ship (pennant A758, commissioned 2003). Worryingly I have a note about a 35BB launched in 1939, so it looks like we have another case of a code transferring from one ship to another.

I propose that we keep the code 35BB for A758 and have a new code labelled up for the old 'Beautemps Beaupré', which I don't think had the hyphen.

Note the the the name in RECO for 35BB has no hyphen, which I think is incorrect.
