Dear All,
I have been approached by Alex Dorsk from the MBLWHOI library with the request to upload a copy of several vocabularies into Freebase. I set him right about permission/attribution (i.e. that it isn't down to BODC and that we shouldn't be the organisation attributed), and am setting about contacting the correct authorities.
One of these is the full platform code list (C17).
Three questions:
(1) Should we allow this?
(2) If the answer is yes are you happy for him to access through our server or would ICES prefer that he use their web service?
(3) Again if the answer is yes what form of citation do we require?
Opinions please.
Cheers, Roy.

Subject: Loading BODC Vocabularies into Freebase?
Hi Roy,
Greetings, this is Alex Dorsk from the WHOI Data Library & Archives. We had
corresponded earlier this year about vocabularies.
I'm writing to ask about loading BODC vocabularies into Freebase
(http://www.freebase.com/). I would like to load terms from the platform and
feature vocabularies into freebase so that I can access those terms with
Freebase tools like Refine (http://code.google.com/p/google-refine/) and
autosuggest widgets (http://code.google.com/p/freebase-suggest/). I have found
these tools to be very useful for cleaning metadata. They could be even more
useful if they allowed me to link metadata to terms in existing vocabularies.
Freebase makes its data available under the Creative Commons Attribution
(CC-BY), and is mindful of data source data licensing
(http://wiki.freebase.com/wiki/Data_source). I would make sure to attribute
any terms I upload to BODC.
Would this be possible?
-Alex
