Dear All,

I am establishing a mailman list to provide a forum for discussions concerning the development of domain ontologies for the EU FP7 Open Service Network for Marine Environmental Data (NETMAR) project through the development of bridging and interoperability technologies between semantic resources on the Web, including building and populating mappings.

The NETMAR project aims to develop portal technology based on OGC WxS service chaining supported by a semantic framework for six usage scenarios:

1) UC-1: Arctic Sea Ice and Metocean Observing System
2) UC-2: Near real time monitoring and forecasting of oil spill
3) UC-3: Relationships between physical and biological variables (Western Channel Observatory time series)
4) UC-4: Ecosystem model validation
5) UC-5: International Coastal Atlas Network (ICAN) for coastal zone management
6) UC-6: Phytoplankton blooms in Gulf of Biscay an English Channel

The objectives of the mailman list are:

1) Capturing coverage requirements of domain knowledge from each of the user communities.
2) Soliciting help and advice from semantic specialists and domain experts outside the project willing to make voluntary contributions of their time.
3) Disseminating detailed information on semantic activities in NETMAR.
4) Providing development and utilisation continuity for the NETMAR semantic resources after the project finishes in 2013.

The composition of the list needs to have strong representation from the NETMAR scenario user communities (both NETMAR computer scientists and domain experts) supported by interested external experts prepared to volunteer a little time. 'Listeners' who just to see what we're up to are also welcome.

Due to problems with past lists, the subscription mechanism for this list will be through subscription request to me. Interested parties please let me know by e-mail to rkl at bodc.ac.uk<mailto:rkl at bodc.ac.uk>. Please DO NOT send responses by reply to this e-mail.

Cheers, Roy.
