[Seavox] Categorisation of models as data production tools

Hi Roy,

Sorry for my late reaction but here's a spreadsheet with the metadata I try to gather from the modelling researchers for the Sea- And Coastal research Programme here in the Netherlands.
Though surely incomplete because of it's infancy state and CDI/EDMO offspring origin it perhaps might help you with your Keyword search.
If I can mean anything else on this area please let me know.

Cheers,
Rob

Hello Sylvain,

Although I didn't respond on the list I felt that Jenny's suggestion was heading down the road of model description for evaluation/usage rather than setting up discovery keywords for the discovery of model datasets. Your contribution is taking us further down that road. What I currently need are keywords to populate an ISO19115 MD_KEYWORD class that maps to the instrument facet in a couple of existing discovery interfaces (SeaDataNet CDI and NETMAR). I find John's suggestions much closer to my current requirement.

Although not delivering what I need at the moment, I like your idea of a thematic (some might call it faceted) classification in the context of model usage metadata. I don't know if you are familiar with the EU METAFOR project, which designed a schema and produced tools for model usage metadata. It would be interesting to look at how your proposed classification facets maps onto the METAFOR scheme. I'll try and find a spare moment to look into this.

Cheers, Roy.

The list provided by Jenny are non-exclusive terms, that is in my experience and also accounting for future evolution multiple of these descriptors could be used. This would be the most flexible way of using such syntax. I do note that tighter definitions are likely needed on all items. It would likely be useful to think of model classification along themes, for example:
Geometry: regular grids (discrete cells with same geometry), conformal grids (retains orthogonality of axis in each cells), irregular triangular grids (TIN), basis functions (spectral),... different geometries might apply to different dimensions (e.g. horizontally regular grids with basis function for the vertical,...)
Solution Approach: FE, FD, stochastic, FE with stochastic nudging, particle, particle in cell,...
Boundary/initial condition: Forecast (initial and boundary conditions only), hindcasts (assimilates data, there are many ways of doing this), ensemble averaged (many mode runs each with different perturbations are averaged),...
Dependent variables:  Z and T (i.e. a stratification model); X, Z and T (e.g a cross-section); X, Y and T (e.g. a baroclinic tide or storm surge model);
Independent variables: Sal, Temp, Ro, DO, SSC,....

Therefore I would propose that a nomenclature system rather than just a list of key words.

Hi Roy,

as an alternative approach:

1. linear

2. non-linear (including chaotic)

3. stochastic

4. deterministic

5. mesh free

6. adaptive grid

Jenny

Dear All,

I am planning to extend the SeaDataNet L05 vocabulary (that will at some stage pass to SeaVoX governance) to provide the ability to discover numerical model output through the 'instrument' search facet. There is increasing pressure to do this from a number of sources, including the NETMAR semantic resource.

What I need for this is a set of between 5 and 10 model classification terms designed to tag numerical model output datasets (several tags may be applied to a single dataset) to facilitate their discovery as instruments. If anybody knows where such a list could be found or would like to propose candidate terms (either individually or a complete set) it would be much appreciated.

Cheers, Roy.
